Summary

Eggstravaganza Events
The community centers hosted their annual Eggstravaganza events on Saturday, April 12, at Arnold Rue, Seifert, Stribley, and Van Buskirk Community Centers. This year, attendance increased by 210 participants across the four centers compared to last year. Staff received positive feedback from attendees through post-event surveys.

Youth Sports
Our Winter Youth Basketball Program concluded in March with 43 teams and 455 players participating, an increase of 15 teams and 160 players compared to last year. We are currently offering two spring sports programs: MLS GO and Spring Volleyball.

Registration is now open for the popular Junior Giants Program, available to youth ages 5-18. This flagship program of the Giants Community Fund is a free, non-competitive, coed baseball and softball league that emphasizes character development. It also includes a curriculum focused on health, education, and bullying prevention.  With a capacity of 300 participants, we encourage families to register soon at jrgiants.org. The program will run during June and July.

Aquatics

Registration is now open for Summer 2025 swim lessons. Class information is available on our website at stocktonca.gov/recreation.

We are excited to share that, thanks to the generous support of the Brian Stoker Fund, we will once again offer $25,000 worth of free swim lessons this year, equivalent to more than 350 lessons. The Learn to Swim Equity Program was established at the San Joaquin Community Foundation through a legacy gift from the estate of Brian M. Stoker. The fund's mission is to support Brian’s lifelong passion for recreation programs, wellness, and healthy living for children and youth.

Lifeguard staffing levels are looking strong this season, with over 30 guards on staff. With three additional American Red Cross certification courses scheduled before June, we anticipate reaching a total of 45 guards before the pools open.

Project Toolbox
We have an exciting field trip planned to the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco on May 10. This experience will give teens the opportunity to explore a natural history museum, aquarium, planetarium, and rainforest, all under one living green roof. Attendees will encounter penguins up close, explore a lush four-story rainforest, experience an earthquake simulation, and journey through space in the planetarium.

The trip's capacity is limited to 40 participants, so early registration is encouraged.

On Saturday, May 17, we will host a Teen Job Fair at Stribley Community Center from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event is designed to give teens the chance to network with local businesses, explore various job opportunities, apply for open positions, and practice their interview skills.

Additional Notes

With the release of our 2025 Summer Activity Guide on April 4, Cheryl Meyers, Recreation Supervisor, will provide an overview of upcoming programs and event highlights at the May meeting. These offerings will take place from May through August 2025.

Additionally, to enhance community engagement and promote programs and events to a broader audience, the Recreation Division of the Community Services Department launched a new Instagram page, instagram.com/stockton.recreation, on April 9.
