body

Summary

In accordance with Standards and Policies No. 1 - Procedural Rules for Conducting Planning Commission Meetings, Section 1 (“Officers”), the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson shall be elected from the membership of the Commission by all of its members on an annual basis. The Commission is now asked to make those elections for the next 12 months.

DISCUSSION

Pursuant to the Procedural Rules, Section 1, the Commission must elect a Chairperson and a Vice-Chairperson at the first meeting in February of each year (Attachment A- Standards and Policies No 1 - Procedural Rules).

The following process is used to elect the officers:

1.                     A motion is made by a Commissioner to nominate an individual for the position.

2.                     The motion requires a second.

3.                     A vote of the entire Planning Commission, including the nominee, is taken.

4.                     The results of the vote will be announced.

The Chairperson is elected first and same process is then repeated for the Vice-Chairperson. Though nominations of more senior Commissioners are common, there is no tenure or experience requirement for a Planning Commissioner to serve in either position.

Because the Officer elections take place later in the meeting, the elected officers will not assume office until the following meeting. At the next meeting, the Chairperson will take the seat at the center of the dais.
