Summary

In accordance with SMC §16.220.040.B.1 [Cultural Heritage Board - Chairperson and Vice Chairperson], “The Board shall elect a chairperson and vice chairperson from among its members. The term of office of the chairperson and vice chairperson shall be for 12 months, or its balance should they be elected to fill a vacancy.” The Commission is now asked to make those elections for the next 12 months.

DISCUSSION

Pursuant to the Procedural Rules, Section 1, the Commission must elect a Chairperson and a Vice-Chairperson at the first meeting in February of each year (Attachment A- Standards and Policies No 1 - Procedural Rules).

The following process is used to elect the officers:

1.                     A motion is made by a Board Member to nominate an individual for the position.

2.                     The motion requires a second.

3.                     A vote of the entire Board, including the nominee, is taken.

4.                     The results of the vote will be announced.

The Chairperson is elected first, and same process is then repeated for the Vice-Chairperson. There is no tenure or experience requirement for a Board Member to serve in either position. Upon election, the Chairperson will take the seat at the center of the dais at the next scheduled meeting.
