Background

In 1978, the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women initiated a “Women’s History Week” celebration. By 1981, word had spread and Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28, which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week of March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” In the years to follow, Congress passed recurring joint resolutions for “Women’s History Week.”

In 1987, upon request by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 to designate the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Congress passed additional resolutions to the same effect from 1988 to 1994. Thereafter, annual Presidential proclamations to designate the month of March as “Women’s History Month” have also been issued.
