CHARTER AMENDMENT ELECTION TIME LINE

To help the Charter Review Advisory Commission plan the timing of placing amendments on the ballot for the November 2016 election, staff is providing the following tentative time line*.
The timing for the notifications and public hearing requirements are set forth in Elections and Government Code.
Between February 16 and April 19, 2016 - Posting, noticing, and conducting two required public hearings
May 17, 2016 - Final City Council meeting date to authorize placing measure language on the ballot:
These dates allow time to forward the measure information to the County Clerk for placement on the County Board of Supervisors July meeting agenda to approve placement on the November 2016 General Election ballot.
In order to achieve these mandated time lines, staff is recommending the Commission complete their work by early December 2015 so that final, proposed amendments can be sent to the Charter Advisory Ad-Hoc Committee in late December. This will allow time to compile the proposed amendments for presentation to the full City Council to begin the public hearing process.
