Summary

Wonka’s Crib Collaboration

In September 2024, teens from the Amelia Adams Whole Life Center presented a proposal to the Parks and Recreation Commission expressing their interest in collaborating with the City to access the gymnasium at the Seifert Community Center for recreational activities.  Since then, we have held in-person and virtual meetings to explore a partnership that would allow participants from Wonka's Crib to enroll in the Seifert Community Center’s Teen Program. This collaboration aims to integrate Wonka’s Crib teens with existing participants to coordinate future Friday night programming. The goal is to provide expanded opportunities for physical activity through access to recreational programs in the gymnasium.  As of today, the Wonka’s Crib staff have completed the necessary volunteer paperwork, and the teens are completing the necessary registration forms to participate. Program planning for Friday nights is currently underway. We are excited about the progress made so far and look forward to fostering a positive collaboration that benefits the teens in our community.

Youth Sports

The Recreation Division is currently accepting registration forms for some of our upcoming youth sports offerings. The deadline for our Start Smart Winter Indoor Sports and Spring Soccer is being accepted through January 12, 2025. The participation fee is $34.50 per sport.  The Division is also accepting registration forms for Spring Volleyball through March 2. 2025, and the First Tee Golf Camp through March 9, 2025. First Tee strives to provide all kids with access to opportunities for personal growth and an introduction to the game of golf in a fun and safe environment. As the First Tee of San Joaquin introduces the game, they also introduce a life skills curriculum that supports the development of values found within the game of golf, including honesty, integrity, perseverance, and respect. All equipment is provided, and no prior golf experience is necessary. This new program will be offered March 18-120, 2025, at Van Buskirk and Arnold Rue Community Centers.

Project Toolbox Events

On Saturday, December 7, City staff accompanied 32 teens to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. During the visit, the teens explored various exhibits showcasing marine life, including kelp forests, open ocean species, and interactive tide pools. They learned about the importance of marine conservation efforts, such as protecting endangered species like sea otters and sharks.  Overall, the trip was not only educational but also a fun and memorable experience, sparking deeper interest among the participants in ocean conservation and marine science.

We are excited to announce the upcoming Career in Sports Night event, scheduled for January 11, 2025, from 4:15 PM to 9:00 PM, in collaboration with the Stockton Kings.

The event will begin with a career Q&A panel featuring professional staff from the Stockton Kings, providing teens with valuable insights into careers in the sports industry. Following the panel, participants will enjoy dinner while watching the Kings compete against the South Bay Lakers. This event offers a unique opportunity for teens to explore potential career paths in sports while engaging with the community and enjoying an exciting basketball game. Registration for this program can be completed at any of our community center locations.
