RECOMMENDATION

Review and evaluate a proposed painting for inclusion in the City of Stockton’s public art collection. If approved by the Stockton Arts Commission, acting as the Gift Committee, the artwork will be installed for public display at the Maya Angelou Branch Library.

body

In accordance with City Manager Administrative Directive MAN-41, which governs the acceptance of gifts, loans, memorials, and commemorations of public art, the Stockton Arts Commission will act as the Gift Committee to review and evaluate the San Joaquin Lions Club's proposed donation of the Helen Keller painting.

The painting is being offered to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Helen Keller’s speech at the 1925 Lions Clubs International Convention, in which she called upon Lions to become “Knights of the Blind.” This project serves as a tribute to that call to action and to the contributions of the local disabilities’ community in Stockton and San Joaquin County.

The painting, painted by a disabled artist, features a vibrant, stylized image of Helen Keller surrounded by handprints from children with disabilities attending Stockton Unified School District’s Walton Special Center. The mural measures 8 feet tall by 4 feet wide, is constructed on ½-inch plywood, and is sealed with three coats of weather-resistant varnish.

If accepted, the painting will be included in the City’s permanent public art inventory and maintained under the oversight of the Public Art Program.
