Summary
Stockton Arts Night
On September 11, 2024, the Stockton Arts Commission hosted its third Stockton Arts Night at the City’s Civic Auditorium. September’s event showcased 14 local artists and performers, with the Commission welcoming over 100 attendees. The final quarterly event of 2024 is scheduled for December 11 at the Civic Auditorium from 4:00 - 7:00 PM. Two additional dates have been planned for 2025, and they will be held on March 12 and June 11, 2025. Applications for local artists to be part of these events are available on the City of Stockton’s website at stocktonca.gov/arts <https://www.stocktonca.gov/arts_in_stockton/stockton_arts_commission.php>.
2025 Public Art Mural Program
On November 1, 2024, the Stockton Arts Commission will release its 2025 Public Art Mural Application. The program seeks artist(s) and/or artist teams to design and paint original artwork on City-owned property. The Public Art Mural Program incentivizes mural installations by providing City funding and the means of curating the City’s collection of murals. This year, the program has $50,000 in available funds for artist(s) and will be accepting applications specifically for McKinley Park. Guidelines are available on the City’s website, stocktonca.gov/publicart <https://www.stocktonca.gov/arts_in_stockton/public_art/index.php>, and provide guidance for artist(s) and artists teams on the process, criteria, and responsibilities associated with a mural project.
Teen Special Activities
As a part of our department’s Teen Program “Project Toolbox,” there are some specialized programs and events that have been scheduled over the next few months.
On October 24, staff at Stribley Community Center hosted an interactive workshop on financial literacy, “Bite of Reality. " The ongoing workshop aims to teach teens how to make smart money decisions while dealing with real-world realities. It is an excellent way for teens to experience and gain a better understanding of the financial challenges they may face as adults. The program’s curriculum is part of nationwide credit unions that wish to bring financial education to all communities.
The Project Toolbox staff will be hosting Grand Canyon University at Stribley Community Center on November 14 and San Joaquin Delta College at Arnold Rue Community Center on November 21, both from 5:30 - 7:00 PM. These events allow teens and their parents to meet with representatives from both institutions to learn more about their majors, specialized programs, campus life, and more.
Finally, we are accepting registration forms for a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Saturday, December 7. Teens will experience everything from the kelp forest to the ocean's mysterious depths and will have an opportunity to explore behind the scenes how the aquarium staff creates an enriched living zone and how the animals are cared for. The trip is free and includes chartered transportation, admission, and lunch. The trip is limited to 45 teen participants ages 12 - 16, and we are currently accepting registration forms at all of our community centers. More information can be obtained on the department’s website at stocktonca.gov/recreation <https://www.stocktonca.gov/community/recreation/index.php>.
