Summary

Teen Job Fair

On Saturday, May 4, as a part of our new teen offerings, the Recreation Division hosted a job fair designed specifically for teens seeking summer employment.  The event was conducted at Stribley Community Center with representatives from 11 local businesses participating.  Originally, staff had confirmed over 20, but many dropped out the day before the event.  Our goals for the event were to provide teens with the opportunity to network with local businesses, explore multiple job opportunities, apply for open positions, and practice their interview skills. We are happy to report over 200 teens participated in the event and many were asked to submit formal applications to the companies.

Adult Sports

The Sports Section of the Community Services Department is currently conducting the spring seasons for both Adult Softball and Basketball. Spring Softball has games in the evening at the Louis Park Softball Complex with 30 teams and over 400 participants.  Divisions consist of co-ed, slow-pitch, and fast-pitch softball.  Additionally, Adult Sports is currently in the middle of its Spring Season for Adult Basketball. Games are being conducted for upper and lower divisions at Arnold Rue and Stribley community centers.  The Spring Season has nearly 150 participants and 15 teams.  Games will be running through May with playoffs starting in June.

Summer Camps

Our Community Center section is ramping up for a summer of fun and exciting camp programs.  Our Summer Discovery Camps will be offered at Arnold Rue, Seifert, Stribley, and Van Buskirk community centers. Camps are scheduled from 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM Monday through Friday weekly through July. The cost is $84 per week, per camper, and $63 for siblings of enrolled campers.  A 25% scholarship can be requested when registering in person at one of our centers.

Additionally, this year will be our third summer offering a free weeklong theater camp to the kids of Stockton.  The theater company will be at Stribley Community Center June

5-10, 2024, conducting auditions, daily practices, and rehearsals, and offering two productions of Gulliver’s Travels for the community.  This year’s camp is open to 65 youth ages 6 -18 to participate.  In addition to the Gulliver’s Travels production opportunity, the theater company staff will also be visiting our Discovery Campsites each day of the week, teaching the intricacies of acting, directing, and set design to our center campers.

Mobile Recreation

June 3, 2024, marks the start of our mobile recreation program, Playmobile. This is a free drop-in program designed to increase opportunities for youth and families of all ages to engage in a variety of recreational activities facilitated by our staff. The Playmobile staff will spend the summer traveling to different neighborhood parks throughout the city providing opportunities for youth and families to meet new friends and participate in fun outdoor activities. The program will run for eight weeks throughout the summer and the full schedule of park locations can be found in our newly released Summer Activity Guide.

Stockton Community Games

This summer, the Community Services Department is introducing a new fun and friendly competition between neighborhoods, the Stockton Community Games. These events are free and open to the entire community. Neighborhoods associated with their local Community Center can compete in 12 events: 3-legged races, a 40-yard dash, free throw contests, cornhole, giant Jenga, hula hoop, football accuracy throw, pickleball, relay races, soccer kick, tug of war, and wiffleball home run derby.

The community can participate by registering for the various events at one of our five Community Centers. Qualifying events will be held throughout June at each location, and the winners of the qualifying rounds will be invited to compete against the other Community Center qualifiers in the city-wide finals on July 20 at Stribley Community Center. Championships are awarded under each of the 12 competitions, with one overall reigning championship for the neighborhood placing highest in the most events.

Those interested can get more information about the Stockton Community Games by going to one of our community centers or visiting our website, which contains FAQs, event rules, and registration information for this competition.
